I think the man deserves his punishment. He even admits to his crime at the end and saying that he is so sorry for what he did. Even the mother didn't feel hatred towards him. I think Chad Gurney deserves his punishment because he not only raped Zoe Sarnacki, but also decapitated her and set her and the house on fire. It might have been insanity, but that still doesn't make up for what he did.
